Media server…

by Mike on Feb.28, 2009, under Computers

So I tried Windows Home Server for a week or so and it didn’t take me long to realize that it wasn’t going to work out. To be fair I was trying to run a sever over wireless which isn’t a great idea. But the main problem wasn’t that it was connected by wireless but that the pros of WHS just don’t outweigh the cons. The major plus was that it would combine all of the drives in the machine to one large volume…But in actuality the damn thing had too many problems with my hardware to actually get that working correctly. The major con would be that it’s over $100 which is really stupid when FREE alternatives (Linux) exist that can do almost everything and much more.

Thus I now have went with the OS I originally knew I should have used, Linux Mint. I have it installed and it’s running great.  I will post all the software I am using to agregate content and stream it to my tv soon.

iComic and iVideos

by Jeromy on Feb.23, 2009, under Rants

I don’t want to read internet comics. I don’t want to watch internet videos.

Is it just me or is the internet just too much now? I can remember when I was bored turning to the internet for some nice easy laughs. These came in form of a AOL Instant Messenger transcript or the occasional Animated GIF. And they were funny I tell you! Just as funny as any webcomic or netvid (which I think I just came up with and if that’s the case then ©®)

Now I’m not saying that the Dancing Hamsters are better than most YouTube videos, wait, yes I am. There are the occasional happen stances of unscripted life that need to be captured and viewed and this is where YouTube should exist. It should have about 20 videos total(!) of events that are super funny and not produced (half of these should include some sort of groinial damage, or GrD as we call it in the GrD community (meetings every thursday)). Also before I continue let me ask you this: How many fucking movies and TV shows have to reference YouTube? “Oh man, Hancock, this video of you on YouTube is nuts” “You’re blowing up! your vid has 10 kagillion views on YouTube!” In 10 years when YouTube has been replaced by AssTube (if the prophecy of Idiocracy is correct (and we all know it is)), we’re going to sit down and watch these movies and ponder, silently or maybe out loudly, “What the fuck is you tube?” And then you’ll have a conversation that goes like this:

Your friend Carl (you meet Carl, after being laid off for taking naked pictures of your boss’ wife and posting them on PhotoBucket (it turned out to be his daughter (you do about 3 years in jail)), in a prison rape recovery unit) : “Don’t you remember Frank? It was a site that you watch fat kids falling off scooters!” (you’re Frank by the way)
Frank: “Oh I remember now, that was, like, forever ago! Before AssTube.com came out LAWLZ” (in the future we start saying LOL out loud, you know it’s coming)

Alls I’m saying is that movies and tv shows shouldn’t date themselves by mentioning a website that will not exist forever, also just friggin drop the whole “you’re really popular on the internet” plot line completely. It’s not hip and it’s not cool, it’s gay and so are you.

I really forgot where I was going, let me go back and reread this….oh yeah.

Here’s the thing about web comics: 99% of them suck. Also would someone please explain to me why web comics are all drawn like stick figures but one thousands times better than any stick figure you or I could draw? It’s obvious that the guy or gal who drew the stupid thing can friggin draw, why not draw something with some depth? My opinion is that it’s another form of slap-in-the-face-ism that is rampant on the internet. “Look at me I have a natural talent, I’m going to take something that is normally done shitty, something that you try to do for giggles, and COMPLETELY embarass your ass!” STOP DRAWING STICK FIGURES! Also, what’s the best comic strip ever? Calvin and Hobbes. Yeah I agree too . Farside comes in second but it wasn’t really a strip, more of a panel. Hold on a sec…

Family Fucking Circus. Does anyone else hate that comic? Full of bad puns and one liners. I literally want to vomit when I come across that strip in the sunday paper. When you’ve read something as great as Calvin and Hobbes or Farside and then realize that Family Circus, which maybe, MAYBE, has 2 minutes of total thought invested, gets just as much space devoted to it, does it not make you want to punch someone?

…I know that Bill Watterson probably spent weeks cultivating those terrific plots and jokes. On the other hand most webcomics just point out the obvious and only a handful do it with any humor. I guess what I’m saying is this: stop writing jokes about the internet and how dumb normal people are compared to you, stop pointing out obvious jokes and start writing long thought out story lines with jokes that compliment the friggin plot. Oh and WE KNOW YOU CAN DRAW so stop drawing stick figures, we get it, you’re cool, so you can stop now.

I’m not saying that web comics can’t be funny or that chick fights from break.com aren’t awesome to watch (and masturbate too, if you’re into that sort of thing, I’m not but I don’t judge). I’m just biding my time until there is a renaissance of text based humor with the occasional animated GIF crammed in the mix.

And now for your edutainment, I present, Fat kid falls off Scooter.

Media Server Update

by Mike on Feb.20, 2009, under Computers

I just wanted to give a quick update on the media server. I decided to gove Windows Home Server a try for the free 120 day evaluation. I like the automatic backups it offers and I don’t know of any linux alternative off hand. If after the trial is up I decide it’s not worth the $100 for the software I will then use Linux Mint. I will post some pics and infor on the software as soon as I get it running.

Building a media server: Part 1, Hardware

by Mike on Feb.17, 2009, under Computers

Today I got some pics of the hardware after I put the 2nd hard disk and the second gig of ram in there. The machine was just sitting in my spare bedroom not doing too much so it was the winner when it came to erasing everything. This was the easy part of the whole thing. The more troublesome part will be deciding what operating system to use and configuring the hardware and software properly.  I am currently on the fence about what os. I have it narrowed down to Linux Mint , Ubuntu Server edition or Windows Home Server.

I’ll let you know tomorrow what I decide, most likely it won’t be WHS due to the additional cost.

Here are the hardware pics till then.

Building a media server: intro

by Mike on Feb.16, 2009, under Computers

I use multiple playback devices around my house  to display my media on my displays. By using my PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Laptop and my good old Xbox with XBMC it has been a real pain remembering what PC I have what videos on. This lead me to the decision of turning one of my PCs into a file/Media server.

The specs of the hardware are as follows:

AMD Athlon 64 3800+

2GB DDR2

2 x 500GB

2 x 500GB External USB 2 drives

300 watt quiet psu

Wireless N

It has some other hardware that would be irrelevant to its purpose as a server, ex sound card, video etc.

The plan is to have this completed in 3 parts. Planning, Hardware, Software. With and intro (what your reading now) and a final thoughts post to wrap everyting up once I have some time to use it for a while.  Stay tuned for part 1 with pics of the hardware.

Fable II and Rock Band

by Mike on Feb.14, 2009, under Video Games

Well, today I went to the mall to pick up a copy of Fable 2 for the Xbox 360 because a new acquaintance of mine said that it was a good game. I read a few reviews and started to get the impression that I should have bought this game when it first came out. Anyway, I arrived at the mall this morning with the family and while my wife was shopping and before I went to the game store I decided to check out the deals at Radio Shack. They had Guitar Hero 3 for the PS3 for $20 but I already have it for the 360 and they also had Assassins Creed for $15 but I read that it wasn’t that good. On the way out I noticed that they had Rock Band in the window with no price on it or any mention of it in the store. At that point I thought it would be worth a shot at asking how much it was as the other games they had were rather cheap. I helped the clerk get it out of the display in the window so he could scan it. Low and behold it came up at only $39!!!! Now this is the whole bundle for the PS3 so I immediately told him I would take it. I still picked up Fable 2 at the Gamestop and it is an excellent game but the the moral of this story is to never be afraid to ask if you don’t see a price.

Kindle 2

by Mike on Feb.13, 2009, under Gadgets, Miscellaneous Ramblings

Today I pre-ordered a kindle 2 for my wife. She reads a lot and just recently the Walden Books went out of business in the mall so the closest bookstore is farther than we care to go on a regular basis. A few weeks ago we were at Target and they has a display model of the Sony ebook reader there that you could mess with. I asked her what she thought about it and she kinda liked it but she didn’t want to be bothered having to connect it to the PC to get the books on the thing so I told her that Amazon had their own ebook reader with wireless connectivity. After seeing it on the Amazon site she still wasn’t really impressed but she was defiantly more interested after I showed her that you could get Newsweek and Time delivered to it of only about $3.00 a month.

Then the Kindle 2 was unveiled and it made the decision a little easier as it looks way more attractive and less like a toy. But that wasn’t the the decisin maker ether, no that came when she told a lady at work about it and she stated that she also thought that it was a great thing to have. As soon as her peers thought it was cool se told me she really wanted it. Hense the pre-order.
